ADULT EDUCATION ORIENTATION - What is Orientation and why is it important?

The next Mt. Blue RSD Adult Education Orientation will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, December 17 and 18, from 9:00-3:00. Classes will begin in January.

What is Orientation?

  1. Orientation is a requirement set forth by the State of Maine that all students participate in 12 hours of orientation as part of the enrollment process into Adult Education.
  2. Day One is filled with information about the program presented by various staff members and instructors. Students must complete paperwork and review policies that will guide their education.  The instructors will also administer tests to determine what learning levels our students may be at in order to place them into appropropriate classes.
  3. Day Two will have the instructors reviewing test results and setting up students'  individual schedules for classes. Students will also hear more information about use of technology in their education and college/career transitions. Not all students will require classes but will still meet with the instructors to review the next step, whether it is preparing for their HiSet (formerly GED) or for taking tests for college.

Why is it important that I attend both days?

  1. In order to best meet our students' educational needs, students must be tested and assigned appropriate classes. This cannot be completed in one day because the instructors meet as a team to discuss each student's goals and educational pathway before meeting with them individually on Day Two.

Do I need to bring anything?

  1. Please bring your lunch and snacks for both days
  2. Please bring your social security number and a state-issued picture ID if you have one (or your drivers license)

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

  1. Call Mt. Blue RSD Adult Education at 778-3460 Monday through Thursday from 8:30-4:00 to register for the next orientation.  The next Orientation Dates are December 17-18, 2014,  February 25-26, 2015 and April 15-16, 2015.

THERE IS STILL TIME TO COMPLETE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA BEFORE GED SCORES ARE INVALID!

Effective January 2014 the State of Maine Department of Education made a decision to no longer administer the GED exam but this has been replaced by the High School Equivalency Test called HiSET TM    This will cover the same content areas as the current GED tests and certifies that a candidate's academic knowledge and skills are equal to those of a high school graduate.  It will also indicate which candidates are college and/or career ready. Mt Blue RSD Adult Education is an official HiSET testing site. Once all tests are successfully completed, a student will obtain their HSE, or High School Equivalency Diploma.

Because it covers the same content areas of reading, writing, math, science and social studies, test takers who started with GED will be able to finish by taking the remainder of their tests with HiSET. GED/HiSET scores can be combined only during 2014. This means that if you have passed some of your GED tests but have not completed all five tests, you may take the remainder of the HiSET tests to obtain your HSE Diploma. If you do not take the remaining tests in 2014, GED scores will be invalid and you will have to retake all five tests. In order to complete the exams in 2014 and receive your scores, testing will only be done through December 11.

There is still no charge to test takers for testing or preparation classes.  Students will be allowed to retest for any content area twice within twelve months at no additional charge. There is a fee for non-residents of Maine.

Students will need to meet the same requirements for HiSET as they did for GED to take the exams - minimum age requirement, photo ID,  pre-test and HiSET practice tests.

Accommodations will still be available for students with documented disabilities by applying on line at www.hiset.org. Accommodations include separate rooms, extended testing times, signed interpreted instructions,  large print, and scribes.

The Mt. Blue RSD Adult Education Office teachers and staff are available to answer any questions by calling 207-778-3460, Monday-Thursday 8:30-4 or just drop by at your convenience. We look forward to hearing from you..remember that the last testing day for 2014 is DECEMBER 11!!

GED is "out"...HiSET is "in"

The State of Maine Department of Education has made a decision to no longer administer the GED exam but don't worry..this has been replaced by the High School Equivalency Test called HiSET TM  effective January 2014.  This will cover the same content areas as the current GED tests and certifies that a candidate's academic knowledge and skills are equal to those of a high school graduate.  It will also indicate which candidates are college and/or career ready. This means that if you have passed some of your GED tests but have not completed all five tests, you may take the remainder of the HiSET tests to obtain your HSE Diploma.

In 2014 we will be using the paper-based version but will begin to transition to the computer-based version as soon as we can. Both are available in English and Spanish.

There is still no charge to test takers for testing or preparation classes.  Students will be allowed to retest for any content area twice within twelve months at no additional charge. There is a fee for non-residents of Maine.

Students will need to meet the same requirements for HiSET as they did for GED to take the exams - minimum age requirement, photo ID, attendance at orientation, take reading and math assessments and HiSET practice tests.

Accommodations will still be available for students with documented disabilities by applying on line at www.hiset.org or by contacting the Adult Education office for a form. Accommodations include separate rooms, extended testing times, signed interpreted instructions,  large print, and scribes.
